The Juneau Freewheelers’ Tour of Juneau race series is this weekend. The event consists of four races all across town over Friday, Saturday and Sunday. In total, the tour will cover over 60 miles, with the longest race being 48 miles on Sunday.

Registration for the first race or the whole tour will take place at the Mendenhall River Community School parking lot on Friday, Aug. 18 at 5 p.m. All participants must be a Juneau Freewheelers’ member. Those not yet affiliated with the group can join before the start of any of the races. Individual races cost $5 while the tour costs $20.

The 2.2-mile prologue — Friday’s race — begins at MRCS at 6:15 p.m. and finishes at the Montana Creek Gun Range.

The following day, racers will sweat their way up Eaglecrest Road before taking a ride out Thane Road. The race to the Eaglecrest Ski Area begins 9 a.m. at the pull-out area approximately one-half mile up Fish Creek Road.

The second race on Saturday starts at the Alaska Shirt Co. warehouse at 120 Mill St. at 3:30 p.m. This 8.7-mile race travels on Thane Road.

The tour finishes on Sunday with a long cycle to the end of “the road.” The Sunday race begins at Mile 18 on Glacier Highway at 9 a.m. and winds to the end of the road (mile 42) before returning to the starting line.

The youth Sunday race will start at the same location as the adult course but will turn around at mile 28. All youth riders must be accompanied by an adult.

Trophies will be awarded in eight different categories including expert, sport, and youth.

Contact race director Jamie Bursell at 723-7872 for more information.
