The Kake girls basketball team had little trouble getting past the Hydaburg Warriors on Wednesday during the first day of the 2016 Region V 1A Basketball Tournament held at Thunder Mountain High School.

Kake defeated Hydaburg 74-31 in a game that was all but over after the first period.

Junior Jacqueliine Bennum scored a game-high 28 points to lead Kake in the win. Senior Talia Davis contributed an impressive 20 points, and senior Sophia Aceveda added 16. Eighth grader Willow Jackson contributed seven.

Freshman Lillian Borromeo led Hydaburg with 10 points, including two baskets from long range. Senior Ashley Christianson and freshman Simone Washington scored six each, senior Chandler Kadake added five and freshman Nevaeh Peele had four.

Kake took an early 21-9 lead after the first quarter, and continued its offensive onslaught from there by extending its advantage to 39-17 at halftime.

The Thunderbirds had their best offensive quarter in the third, scoring 23 points while only giving up eight to the Warriors. Bennum scored 11 of her 28 points in the third to end the quarter 62-25.

Kake shot 6-of-13 from the free throw line, and Hydaburg shot 5-of-8.
