There has been plenty of ink spilled, social media posts written, and stories shared about the late Johnny Ellis and his kind and generous spirit. About his depthless knowledge of Alaska politics. About his tireless dedication throughout his life as a public servant to our state. About his love for the Alaska State Legislature and those in and around it.

But the enduring legacy of Johnny Ellis will live on through his work to raise and inspire the next generation of Alaskan leaders. Traditionally when we lose an elder statesman, it is their peers and colleagues who perform the lion’s share of toasts and tributes. But after news of Johnny’s passing spread, the outpouring of love from countless young Alaskans was overwhelming. Johnny made a difference in the lives of so many up-and-coming Alaskans interested in politics and public service. Even after he left the Legislature, his life’s work shifted from using his knowledge and experience to help Alaskans as a state Senator, to passing it along to the next generation as a mentor and friend to so many. His constant encouragement, infectious humor, relentless enthusiasm, and passion for our state helped raise a new crop of fierce advocates for Alaska.

This Saturday is the 36th annual Sham Jam, an event that Johnny Ellis started in 1985 as an effort to connect the community of Juneau with the staffers and legislators who work in the state Capitol, as well as to give back to the causes he held dear. It’s the perfect encapsulation of Johnny’s giving nature, and his love for his community and the people around him. As the staffers, mentees, and friends of Johnny who are taking up the torch for this annual tradition, we would be honored if you would join us at 8 p.m. this Saturday, March 26, at the Red Dog Saloon for Sham Jam 2022. All proceeds will be going to SEAGLA, the Southeast Alaska LGBTQ+ alliance, which provides a supportive network for gay, lesbian, bisexual, transgender and queer people in Southeast Alaska.

Please help us celebrate the life of an Alaskan leader who gave everything to not only his generation, but the next.
