Letter: Sullivan should continue support for Ukraine shown by US in past

I strongly urge Sen. Sullivan to live up to his, and our allies’ past and current support of Ukraine’s efforts to maintain its internationally recognized territorial borders, sovereignty and democracy. President Trump’s effort to pause the Russian invasion of Ukraine by essentially forcing Ukraine (via a threat to curtail U.S. support) to recognize all territories captured and/or now occupied by Russia (including Crimea) as Russian is basically supporting President Putin’s war goal. The USA, and Congress, like our UN and European allies, should never support such a position.

Crimea has been internationally recognized as part of Ukraine since 1954. Only North Korea, Belarus, Syria, Afghanistan, Nicaragua, and a few other countries have accepted Russia’s 2014 annexation of Crimea, and the current invasion is supported by China and Iran. Are these powers the U.S. and our Congress want to align with?

Until recently U.S. senators from both political parties have fully supported Ukraine’s fight to maintain its internationally recognized borders. So why are you, and our Republican senators and representatives, now silent as President Trump works to pause the war on terms in Mr. Putin’s favor? Most American’s and our allies around the world see grave danger in codifying Mr. Putin’s war goals. I urge you to speak out for continuing our country’s full moral and military support of Ukraine and for increasing sanctions against Russia. We cannot allow this massive aggression against the rule of international law and order to succeed.
