Writers’ Weir: Winter at Kona Reef, Hawaii

Upon the edge of Kona town

lies a reef of great renown.

Waves well up out of the deep

to crash upon this famous reef.

In the eddies near the shore

turtles feed and shore birds soar.

And at the edge the surfers dwell

waiting for the perfect swell.

In the distance from the beach

humpback whales may blow or breach.

Spinner dolphins twirl and run

and tourists parasail for fun.

Twice a week the cruise ships come

and disgorge people by the ton.

On such days to be discreet

stay by the pool and off the street.

Sunset brings a different show

perhaps green flash and afterglow.

Cameras click and people stare

and very soon the beach is bare.

Long may the busy sea expound

with mesmerizing waves and sound.

And so my friends this is my story

of Kona Reef in all its glory.
