Juneau-Douglas High School volleyball captured the Region V 4A tournament last weekend, besting Thunder Mountain and Ketchikan for the right to compete as Southeast’s representative at the state championships.

It took JDHS two matches to best runner-up Thunder Mountain in the championship as the Falcons came into the title round without a loss in the double elimination tournament. The Region V crown came down to a tie-breaking, one-set match — the tournament’s version of overtime — which JDHS took 30-18.

JDHS’ tournament started a bit rocky on Friday night. After enjoying a first round bye, the Crimson Bears took a straight-set loss to Thunder Mountain (25-20, 25-15, 25-23). That loss sent Juneau-Douglas to a Saturday matchup with Kayhi, who they overcame in four sets (18-25, 17-25, 25-23, 17-25).

The Crimson Bears then redeemed their second round loss with a win in the first match of the championship, besting the Falcons in their own three set sweep (22-25, 22-25, 23-25), forcing the winner-take-all, single-set match.

Before Kayhi won the Southeast crown in 2015, JDHS enjoyed a 21-year win streak at the Region V tournament; their return to region prominence marks their 30th Region V title in school history.
