JDHS soccer teams start successful road trip

Crimson Bears win openers and now play conference foe Colony.

The Juneau-Douglas High School: Yadaa.at Kalé Crimson Bears girls and boys varsity soccer teams began a three-day road trip with wins against Houston on Thursday.

The girls defeated Houston 8-0 and the boys topped the Hawks 10-0.

“We got up super early, got on a plane and had a drive when we landed,” JDHS coach Matt Dusenberry said. “I think we even got a text from the coach for our JV game saying ‘are you guys coming?’ We literally got there 15 minutes before the JV game (vs. Colony JV), and then had to turn around and drive to Houston for the varsity game.”

Houston is a Division II team playing in the Northern Lights Conference.

JDHS junior Peyton Wheeler scored three goals against Houston with assists by freshman Marigold Lindoff and senior Milina Mazon, and one goal was unassisted.

Sophomore Clairee Overson scored two goals, one assisted by senior Cerys Hudson and the other unassisted.

Senior Parker Boman and freshman Ayla Erickson both scored unassisted goals and sophomore Riley Schultz scored one goal assisted by Wheeler.

The girls Hard Hat Award went to junior Kenzie Simonson.

“She just came to play and had a pretty calm presence,” Dusenberry said. “She had energy on both sides of the ball, meaning, when we needed to go forward she was there and when we lost the ball and needed somebody to track somebody down she provided that too.”

Dusenberry said he told the team at halftime they were not playing very well.

“But I subbed Kenzie off just before half,” he said. “And I told her ‘hey listen, I know what I am going to be saying at halftime and it does not reflect on you.’ She came ready to play.”

The JDHS varsity teams play a derby series against Division I Railbelt Conference foe Colony today and Saturday.

The Colony girls are mid-pack in the Railbelt standings and the Knights’ boys are on top.

“They always go forward quickly and get back quickly,” Dusenberry said of the Colony girls. “But also, from what we see, if you play quick to feet you can get around all that, because all their players go around where the ball is. So if you can find somebody on the opposite side of the field quickly there is lots of space… With who we have, if we can play to each other’s feet and not hold the ball so long then good things can hopefully happen.”

The Crimson Bears JV girls defeated the Colony JV 5-0. Goals came from freshman Gracie Snyder (assist sophomore Miley Andrews), junior Jimena Ramirez (Snyder), Ramirez (Snyder), junior Tearamae Alexander (Andrews) and Ramirez (junior Lola Brown). The team’s Hot Sauce award went to Ramirez.
