The Juneau-Douglas and Thunder Mountain swim teams celebrated senior night by hosting an invitational meet this weekend, and juniors Mia Ruffin and Gabi Kito honored their upperclassmen with wins.

Ruffin’s included the girls 100 free in 55.96 and 100 breast in 1:10.86, and Kito’s completed the girls 100 fly in 1:05.51.

“Senior night is always fun,” JDHS coach Seth Cayce said. “It’s important to recognize and honor all the hard work the seniors put in over their four years. The way our team is racing and how they are finishing is exactly how I want them to right now. Each of them have one meet after this and then we will start to prepare and taper for our regional championships in four weeks.”

Added JDHS senior Rielly Walsh, “I’m really happy that we have a meet here in town. We have a really fun and hard working team this year, which is exciting.”

TMHS freshman Bergen Davis honored his senior sibling Jordan with a pair of wins, taking the boys 200 IM in 2:01.50, the 100 breaststroke in 1:01.57 and was on the winning boys 200 yard medley relay with classmates Chris Ray, Spencer Holt and Noatak Post.

“Senior night was very emotional for us,” TMHS senior Taylor Beardslee said. “We have become a family and it was really hard knowing that this was my last home meet with them.”

TMHS’ Holt added a win in the 200 yard free at 1:55.03 and 100 fly in 55.79 and Ray took the 500 free in 5:22.43.

“I feel that the team did well and were supportive with each other,” TMHS senior Dylan Allio said. “And even with the other teams.”

JDHS senior Eliza Chappell, junior Ria Padro, freshman Cameron Howard and senior Rielly Walsh won the girls 400 free relay in 4:07.33.

“The team did really well yesterday,” TMHS senior Naomi Ferster said. “I am really proud of the effort they gave each other, which is something a team needs to be a family, which is what we are.”

JDHS junior Eric Schumacher won the 100 backstroke in 1:01.07.

The Juneau girls captured the team title on Friday, with Sitka finishing second, TMHS placing third, Petersburg fourth, Ketchikan fifth and Craig sixth.

“I think our team swam really well,” JDHS senior Sophia Kaelke said. “Our hard work in and out of the pool is starting to show and it’s nice to see it start to pay off. I’m excited to see what we do at regions and state this year.”

Sitka captured the boys title while TMHS was second, Ketchikan third, JDHS fourth, Petersburg fifth and Craig sixth.

“It was an emotional night for me, as Taylor is my daughter,” TMHS coach Jason Wilson said. “This being her last year and my last year coaching her has been happy and sad. The kids swam very well. We worked really hard this week so they were swimming tired but still swimming well. This is a good sign our training is on target.”

Added Cayce, “This weekend was a good test for everyone. All the southeast eams were here so it made the meet a bit longer.”
