My Turn: It’s time to secure Alaska’s economic future

Alaska is at a pivotal time in our state’s strategic decisions. We have the opportunity to pave the way for prosperity and secure Alaska’s economic future.

As Alaskans navigate the unique challenges posed by our geographic location, it becomes increasingly clear that innovative leadership and bold policy initiatives are essential for our state, especially in Southeast Alaska.

The current leadership in Washington doesn’t care about Alaskans.

The Biden administration has repeatedly failed our state. Out-of-control inflation, housing costs, and stifling federal regulations that have halted resource development have hurt hard-working Alaskans. The long-term impact will be impossible if we do not change course.

Rep. Mary Peltola has voted nearly in lockstep with the Biden administration since her first day in Congress. Peltola has been an outspoken champion of him as president.

And Peltola’s efforts to lock up ANWR and NPR-A demonstrate her unwillingness to unlock Alaska’s resource potential.

We must choose leaders who understand our state’s intricacies, possess the foresight to navigate its complexities and represent all Alaskans. Congresswoman Peltola supports an agenda that puts our state last and halts economic progress.

Candidate Nick Begich, with his pragmatic approach and deep-rooted understanding of Alaska, presents a compelling vision for securing a strong economy that will allow our state to thrive and lead due to its strategic location. Unlike the partisan rhetoric coming out of Washington, Begich prioritizes pragmatic solutions that address Alaska’s political landscape.

At the heart of Begich’s belief system, lies a commitment to commonsense policies that foster growth and sustainability.

Begich’s support of ANWR represents the cornerstone of his vision for Alaska’s future. ANWR, often cited as one of the most promising untapped oil reserves in the United States, holds the potential to generate substantial revenue for the state.

The NPR-A, another focal point of Begich’s sustainable resource development, adds another layer to his economic blueprint. This vast expanse of federally managed land is rich in oil and gas resources. Begich’s increased exploration and development in NPR-A aligns with his broader goal of harnessing Alaska’s resources to fuel our economic growth.

When it comes to ensuring a sustainable tourism industry, Begich supports targeted investments in infrastructure and community-based tourism initiatives to not only attract visitors, but also ensure that the economic benefits are felt at the grassroots level.

Southeast Alaska relies heavily on the tourism industry. In 2023, Alaska’s tourism industry supported over 48,000 jobs and generated $3.9 billion in direct spending, which is the economic engine of Southeast Alaska. We need to ensure a long-term sustainable tourism industry by enhancing accessibility through improved transportation links and investing in sustainable tourism practices.

By harnessing tourism’s potential and investing in diversified industries, we can lay the groundwork for a prosperous future that honors Alaska’s promises of a better tomorrow for future generations.

Securing Alaska’s environment requires more than policy prescriptions; it demands visionary leadership grounded in common sense.

Nick Begich is the candidate who embodies both.

As independent-minded Alaskans, we owe him our support on Aug. 20.

• Peggy Ann McConnochie is a Juneau resident since 1980 and a member of Capital City Republican Women, which has endorsed Begich.
