William D. DeArmond (Bill) died on June 28, 2017, at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle, Washington, at the age of 79.
Bill was born April 27, 1938, in Sitka, Alaska. He graduated from Juneau High School in 1956 and Stanford University in 1960. Following Army service in Europe, he worked in Munich, Germany, at Radio Free Europe for many years. He moved to Sitka in the mid-1990s where he worked as an editor for National Public Radio, Editor of the Alaskan Southeaster, and for the National Park Service. He also served many years on the Sitka Historical Resources Commission. He married and moved to Juneau in 2012.
Bill was predeceased by his parents, Robert N. and Dale Burlison DeArmond, and sister Jane Connolly. He is survived by his wife, Malin Babcock of Juneau, daughter Elizabeth De Armond (Ken Hollender) of Wilmette, Illinois, stepchildren Doug Murray (Shauna) of Juneau, and Gwen Murray Horchover (Bob) of Clinton, Washington.
No services are planned but family and close friends will scatter his ashes in Lena Cove next spring.
