US Rep. Young named chairman emeritus of House committee

ANCHORAGE — A spokesman for U.S. Rep. Don Young says the Alaska congressman has been named chairman emeritus of the House Natural Resources Committee.

Young was given the honor after reaching the end of his six-year term as chairman of the committee’s subcommittee on Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs, The Alaska Public Radio Network reported.

Young has been either a committee chairman or subcommittee chairman for most of the past two decades.

Spokesman Matt Shuckerow said the chairman emeritus title gives Young the ability to participate in any of the Natural Resources Committee’s five subcommittees.

“He certainly looks forward to all the opportunities, and certainly feels like he can be even a more powerful voice for Alaska by being able to serve on all those five subcommittees,” Shuckerow said. “You know, it’s a unique role.”

Young will continue to be a member of the Natural Resources Committee and the House Transportation &Infrastructure Committee, which he also used to chair.

Young was chairman of the resources committee from 1995 to 2001. He then served as the transportation chairman for six years before becoming chairman of the Indian, Insular and Alaska Native Affairs in 2011.
