JPD arrests woman who escaped police custody at BRH

Early Saturday morning, a Juneau police officer detained 28-year-old Crystal Rose Phillips, who had escaped from police custody at Bartlett Regional Hospital about three weeks ago, according to a press release from the Juneau Police Department.

The arresting officer found Phillips and two others in a parked car near the Jordan Creek Mall at about 1:50 a.m. Saturday. She was arrested on two outstanding no-bail warrants for contempt of court, for leaving BRH on May 20 when the JPD officer watching her had to leave to respond to a domestic violence call.

On Saturday, Phillips once again tried to abscond from police. JPD’s release said that once police saw her in the vehicle, she switched seats in the car and then jumped out the car door. JPD said the officer was able to arrest her, despite the unsuccessful attempt to get away, and she was taken to Lemon Creek Correctional Center.

JPD had earlier asked the public to help locate Phillips, who was arrested May 19 for promoting contraband alongside 32-year-old Brandon Ross Stevens. Phillips had told the arresting office that she had swallowed drugs and was becoming ill, prompting the officer to take her to BRH rather than LCCC.

Police watched over her as she stayed in BRH’s critical care unit for almost two days. At about 10:30 p.m. on May 20, the officer in charge of watching Phillips in the hospital left to respond to the domestic violence call, and Phillips left the hospital without medical clearance. She remained at large until Saturday morning.
