Aukeman camp gearing up

It’s not too late to get in shape for August’s Aukeman Triathlon.

High Cadence Triathlon Training, headed up by Jamie Bursell, is putting on the Aukeman Training Camp, an eight-session triathlon camp designed specifically to train individuals for the Aukeman.

The one-and-a-half-hour sessions take place every Monday and Thursday night beginning on July 9. This year’s Aukeman Triathlon is Saturday, Aug. 4.

Bursell said the chief outcome of the camp is for participants to safely compete in the race. The second main outcome is for participants to perform comfortable and confident in the race, which consists of a 750-meter swim in Auke Lake, a 19-kilometer bike ride and 5K run.

“It’s totally doable for the average person,” Bursell said. “It’s going to take just over an hour, up to an hour and a half, and it’s always very well organized. You get a T-shirt, you get prizes, it’s a really festive atmosphere.”

Bursell said Aukeman triathletes will be much better off if they spend time training in Auke Lake.

“If people are going to do the triathlon it’s a good idea to not just swim one time or two times, but swim a lot of times with different people and get comfortable enough to race,” she said.

The Aukeman camp is the second of three triathlon camps Bursell is instructing this year. A spring camp met between January through March and a fall camp will meet beginning in October.

“I love to cheer people across the line and see the smiles on their face,” Bursell said. “It gives people a lot of self-value.”

There are at least 11 people signed up for the camp and about 10 more spaces available, according to Bursell. Find the registration link online at www.highcadence.weebly.com.
