Alaska Native word of the week

This week’s word is x‘áakw, which means sockeye that has entered fresh water.

November is Native American and Alaska Native Heritage Month, and it’s being observed with lectures, exhibits and events around town, and in the Capital City Weekly.

There will be an Alaska Native word with a definition from the month long 10 Tlingit Words to Know and Use exhibit at the Juneau-Douglas City Museum in the Capital City Weekly. You can hear how the word is pronounced online on the Juneau Empire’s website courtesy of Sealaska Heritage Institute.
