How We Ranked

We considered all of the following factors when ranking the best kratom companies available today:

Overall Quality: Some kratom companies source their products from low-quality factory farms, while others source their kratom from high-quality growers. Kratom quality played a huge role in our rankings, with higher weighting than any other category.

Kratom Testing: You’re buying kratom for the high-quality kratom. You want kratom companies that test their product for purity and alkaloid content. Some kratom companies take their kratom from growers and sell it directly to consumers. Others take the time to test each batch before releasing it.

Offerings & Variety: We preferred kratom with a range of dosage, strain, and vein color options. We also linked kratom companies that offered capsules, tinctures, powders, and other options. The more high-quality options for consumers, the better.

Sourcing: Kratom sourcing isn’t as transparent as it is with other industries. Some companies maintain fair trade sources. Others disclose the specific farms or regions where their kratom comes from. We liked kratom brands with transparent sourcing.

American Kratom Association (AKA) Approval: Kratom is largely unregulated. However, the American Kratom Association (AKA) has issued guidelines for kratom companies operating in (or selling to) the United States. The best kratom companies are AKA compliant. AKA compliance requires certain cleaning and testing procedures. Most American kratom companies ship bulk kratom from overseas suppliers (in Indonesia and other Southeast Asian countries) before assembling the kratom in the United States at AKA compliant facilities.

cGMP Compliant: Like AKA compliancy, cGMP compliance can differentiate good and bad kratom companies. When a company has a cGMP compliant facility, it means their facility meets certain manufacturing standards. Some companies are AKA GMP compliant (which means they meet American Kratom Association standards), while others are cGMP compliant, which means they meet current Good Manufacturing Practices outlined and enforced by the FDA.

Customer Service & Support: Some kratom companies have an excellent reputation for customer service and support. Others have a reputation for shady refund practices and other problems.

Pricing & Value: Some people want to spend hundreds of dollars on kratom. Others want to buy a sample pack for under $20. We weren’t biased towards any specific kratom price range, although we preferred companies with transparent pricing and good value at their price range.

Company Reputation & Transparency: Some companies have a strong reputation for offering high-quality kratom over the last decade. Others are new to the space, motivated to make a quick buck. We preferred companies with a longstanding reputation for quality products and services. We weren’t biased against new companies, although we verified they had strong quality control practices in place – and they weren’t just capitalizing on the kratom name.

Advertised Health Benefits: Kratom is not a miracle drug that will cure all diseases and illnesses. In fact, the FDA has not approved the use of kratom for anything, and some studies have found numerous risks associated with kratom. Some kratom companies are open and honest about the benefits of kratom. Others promise you a ridiculous range of benefits with little proof. Like other supplements, kratom cannot be advertised online with claims of curing or preventing a disease. Some manufacturers toe the line by suggesting various benefits. Others are open and honest.

After weighing all of these factors, our editorial team picked the best kratom companies available online today.

What is Kratom?

Kratom is a tropical tree native to South Asia and Southeast Asia. The leaves and other parts of the plant have been used in traditional medicine for centuries, including for pain relief and other conditions.

Today, kratom has officially reached the western world. Many people use kratom today to treat symptoms of depression or anxiety. Others use it to energize the body and mind.

Because kratom is a dietary supplement, it’s not regulated by the FDA. The FDA regulates foods and drugs – not supplements. The FDA has not approved using kratom for depression, anxiety, or other purposes.

How Does Kratom Work?

Although kratom is not an opioid, many have compared its effects to opioids. It seems to work similar to morphine or codeine.

Kratom is naturally rich with an ingredient named mitragynine. Mitragynine binds to opioid receptors in your brain to relieve pain.

Because it binds to opioid receptors in the brain, kratom may have antidepressant and anti-anxiety effects. Some studies also show it has sedative effects.

What Does Kratom Do?

We need more research to verify any of the advertised benefits of kratom. The FDA has not approved the use of kratom for anything. However, people use kratom for all types of benefits, including:

  • Pain and muscle aches
  • Fatigue and energy
  • High blood pressure
  • Opioid addiction and withdrawal
  • Post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and similar conditions
  • Inflammation and immunity

Some studies also show kratom can suppress appetite, making it easier to lose weight. Others take kratom for digestive issues, cognitive enhancements, and overall health and wellness.

Traditional Uses for Kratom

Kratom has been historically used for centuries throughout its native Growing regions. It has played an important role in traditional medicine in parts of Africa and Southeast Asia.

Traditionally, kratom has also gone by names like kakum (or kakuam), ketum, thang, thom, and biak.

In alternative medicine, doctors would use kratom leaves to make teas. These teas could purportedly help with pain and opioid withdrawal, fatigue and energy issues, and other effects.

If someone was recovering from opioid withdrawal in Southeast Asia, for example, a traditional medicine practitioner may recommend kratom as a substitute to help with recovery.

Outside of its opioid-like effects, however, kratom is traditionally used as a stimulant.

Kratom has also been traditionally chewed, smoked, or ingested in capsules. You can brew it in a tea or ingest it orally.

How to Use Kratom

Although kratom was traditionally taken as a type of tea, it’s more commonly taken in capsules today.

Some of the most popular methods of ingesting kratom include:

  • Capsules
  • Tinctures
  • Extracts
  • Tablets
  • Gums
  • Teas

Some even eat the kratom leaves fresh or dried. Others add dried leaves to boiling water to create a tea.

When you buy kratom online, you’re typically buying dried kratom leaves that are grinded and added to a capsule. You swallow the capsule, and the capsule helps carry the active ingredients through your stomach acid where they can be digested by your body.

Some people have also smoked or vaporized kratom, although these ingestion methods are less popular.

Kratom’s effects vary depending on your method of ingestion. However, there are no studies comparing or contrasting the effects of kratom based on the method of ingestion.

Is Kratom Legal?

Kratom is illegal in many countries, including many countries in Southeast Asia where traditional use of kratom is popular.

Although kratom is legal in the United States at a federal level, many states (and even some cities) have banned kratom. Today, kratom websites will not ship products to certain states or cities.

The government of Thailand passed Kratom Act 2486 in 1943, making it illegal to plant kratom trees. The government of Thailand has issued other legislative action over the years, and the plant continues to be illegal across the country.

Malaysia banned kratom in 2003, placing the substance on the national Poison Act.

Other countries that have banned kratom include Australia, Denmark, Finland, Israel, Japan, Latvia, Lithuania, Myanmar, Malaysia, New Zealand, Poland, Romania, Russia, Singapore, South Korea, Sweden, Thailand, and Vietnam.

In the United States, several states have made it illegal to buy, sell, possess, or use kratom. States where kratom is illegal include Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Wisconsin.

Other states and cities have passed laws regulating or banning kratom. Sarasota County (in Florida), Denver (in Colorado), and San Diego (in California), for example, have all passed laws banning kratom.

Despite being illegal in Thailand, Malaysia, and other Southeast Asian countries, you can find illegal preparations of kratom sold at cafés and bars.

Types and Strains of Kratom

Kratom, like marijuana, has different strains that can lead to significantly different effects.

Although there’s no major research comparing different strains of kratom with one another, you can find plenty of anecdotal evidence online comparing and contrasting different kratom strains.

Here are some of the most popular kratom strains and their effects, according to anecdotal reports online:

Maeng Da: Maeng da is a family of kratom strains. The strains are known for their strength and longevity. If you want to maximize the effects of kratom and enjoy those effects for a long time, then maeng da strains may be the right choice for you, according to anecdotal reports online. Maeng da is available in red, green, or white colors. Some take maeng da for its stimulant effects, claiming it induces feelings of wellbeing. Others feel like maeng da reduces pain. Some people feel more talkative after taking maeng da. Maeng da originally comes from Thailand, although it can now be found in Indonesia and Malaysia.

Indo: Indo kratom, as you may have guessed from the name, comes from Indonesia. It’s considered to be less powerful than other kratom strains. Most report feeling a mild surge in energy after taking Indo kratom strains. Others take Indo kratom for relaxation, anxiety, pain relief, or an overall feeling of well being.

Bali: Bali kratom comes from the Indonesian island of Bali. Available exclusively as red vein kratom, the reddish-colored kratom is prized for its pain relief effects. Many Bali kratom fans claim it’s the most “opioid-like” kratom strain because of its noticeable effects on pain, depression, and chronic pain.

Thai: Thai kratom is native to Thailand and available in red, green, and white varieties. The effects of Thai kratom vary based on its color. Some take green and white Thai kratom strains to stimulate and create a high. Others take red vein kratom for pain relief.

Borneo: Continuing with the location-based theme of kratom strain names, Borneo kratom comes from the island of Borneo. It’s available in red, green, and white vein options. Many people believe Borneo kratom has more sedative effects than other strains listed here. Others like Borneo kratom for its effects on anxiety and stress.

Malaysian: Malaysian kratom is available in green, red, and white varieties. It purportedly provides a balance between stimulating and sedative effects.

Green Malay: Green Malay is a Malaysian kratom strain with a distinctive, dark green color. At low doses, Green Malay can purportedly boost energy and focus while also relieving pain. At higher doses, some experience a sedative effective. Green Malay is popular with everything from pain relief to energy to anxiety.

Other Kratom Strains: You can find dozens of kratom strains available online today. Other notable strains include Bali Gold, Bentuangie, Elephant, Green Ketapang, Green Hulu Kapuas, Red Ketapang, Red Dragon, Red Horn, Red Sandai, and Yellow Sumatra, among many others.

Some kratom suppliers rank their strains by their intended benefits. Some strains are associated with energy and mood, for example, while others are known for relaxation and sedation.

Kratom Vein Colors

Kratom veins go through different colors in their cycle. A new kratom plant has a red color. As the plant reaches the middle of its growth cycle, it appears whiter. Towards the end of its growing cycle, it has a green color.

Vein colors changes the effects of kratom. Here are the differences in vein colors and their effects, according to kratom users online:

Red (Early Growth Cycle): Red kratom strains offer the greatest relaxation and pain relieving effects. They’re typically the most popular strains for those seeking the most noticeable effects of kratom. If you’re dealing with opiate withdrawal symptoms, for example, then you may want red kratom strains. The effects of red kratom last about five hours.

White (Middle Growth Cycle): White strains provide energy-boosting effects. They can also improve productivity. Some people use the white strains to treat depression and insomnia. The effects of white strains last for three to five hours.

Green (Late Growth Cycle): Green strains are the most powerful for relieving pain, according to online reports. Green strains are also known for their gentle stimulating effects. They’re ideal for lifting mood and providing other targeted benefits. The effects of green strains last for around eight hours.

Kratom Benefits: What Does Science Say?

Some studies have validated the use of kratom, while other studies have shown it may not be effective – or even safe. More research is needed to verify the safety, efficacy, and benefits of kratom. However, we’ll summarize some of kratom’s best research below.

According to this 2017 review study published in Frontiers of Psychiatry, kratom has both stimulant and sedative dose-dependent effects. After reviewing dozens of studies on kratom, researchers also found evidence supporting the antinociceptive, antidepressant, anxiolytic (anti-anxiety), and anorectic effects of kratom.

However, researchers also identified safety concerns linked to kratom. Researchers found a connection between kratom usage and hospital visits and deaths in several countries, for example. Overall, researchers found there was a lack of double-blind controlled trials on kratom, making it difficult to accurately assess the effects – or safety – of kratom in a professional setting.

Over the last few years, however, kratom has surged in popularity. As more studies on kratom get released, we’re learning more about what kratom is and how it works.

How much kratom should you take? What does science say about kratom dosages? In this 2018 study, researchers answered that question by surveying 8,049 kratom users. Users reported experiencing the benefits of kratom at doses of around 5g, with people taking that dosage up to 3 times per day to experience the benefits of kratom.

That study also found that the majority of kratom users (56.91%) were males between the ages of 31 and 50 (55.09%).

Of the 8,049 kratom users surveyed, people reported using kratom for the following benefits:

  • Decreased pain (85.01% of surveyed kratom users)
  • Increased energy (83.75%)
  • Less depressive mood (80.00%)

A significant number of kratom users also reported using kratom for less anxious mood, elevated mood, or reducing or stopping the use of opioid pain relieving medication, among other effects.

At a chemical level, researchers have isolated 25 alkaloids from kratom, with the primary psychoactive alkaloids being mitragynine and 7-hydroxymitragynine. Studies show that these two compounds have mu-opioid receptor agonist activity.

Is kratom a stimulant or a sedative? The answer to that question may depend on the dose. At lower levels, kratom appears to have stimulant effects, with users reporting increased alertness, physical energy, talkativeness, and overall social behavior. At higher doses, kratom leads to more opioid-like effects along with sedative and euphoric effects.

Studies show it takes 5 to 10 minutes to feel the effects of kratom, with effects lasting for 2 to 5 hours.

Kratom Side Effects

Of the 8,049 surveyed kratom users in a 2018 review, a significant number reported experiencing negative side effects associated with kratom.

20.93% of kratom users reported experiencing side effects from kratom usage, including nausea (12.75%), constipation (9.17%), and dizziness or drowsiness (4.81%).

Other common side effects include itching, sweating, dry mouth, tongue numbness, increased urination, and loss of appetite. All of these side effects appeared to be dose dependent, with users consuming more than 8g of kratom per dose experiencing more side effects.

More serious side effects associated with heavy, long-term usage of kratom can include heart palpitations, high blood pressure, insomnia, loss of appetite, loss of libido, memory and cognition problems, kidney and liver problems, and psychosis. In 2016, poison control centers received 660 calls about kratom exposure, according to CDC data, with most reported side effects being minor or moderate.

The risk of side effects appears to increase when mixing kratom with other substances, including alcohol.

Kratom can be deadly. Some studies show that kratom overdose can lead to coma and death. Other studies show that mixing kratom with alcohol and other substances can lead to life-threatening complications.

Kratom Withdrawal

If you stop using kratom, you may experience withdrawal symptoms.

Withdrawal from kratom can increase symptoms of anxiety and depression, for example.

Others experience insomnia, mood swings, decreased sexual drive, and nausea when going through kratom withdrawal.

Typically, you must use kratom for an extended period of time to experience withdrawal symptoms. However, this period of time varies widely depending on your age, usage, and dosage.

Kratom Dosage

According to this 2018 review, most users report taking an average kratom dose of around 5g to experience the effects. They take this dose up to three times per day.

According to kratom dosage charts, a 5g dose is considered strong. You can expect to experience sedative, euphoric, and analgesic (pain relieving) effects at this dose.

According to anecdotal kratom dose guides online, these are the doses and effects associated with kratom:

1g (Entry Level Dose): A 1g dose of kratom may have stimulating and mood boosting effects. These effects are subtle but noticeable. Experienced users may not feel this dose, but new users should feel them.

2g (Mild Dose): A 2g dose of kratom is associated with mood-boosting and stimulating effects. If you did not experience the effects of kratom at the smaller dose, then the mild dose may be a good second step.

3g to 4g (Moderate Dose): A 3g to 4g dose of kratom is considered to be moderate, giving you a balance of stimulating, euphoric, sedation, and pain killing effects.

4g to 5g (Strong Dose): Most people report using a 4g to 6g dose to feel the effects of kratom, according to the 2018 survey. This is considered a very strong dose for beginner users, and you should experience significant sedative, euphoric, and analgesic effects.

5g to 8g (Very Strong Dose): Most people cannot handle this dose. You can expect to experience significant sedative effects at this dose. Some people experience euphoria-induced hallucinations at this dose.

Overall, dosage varies widely depending on age, weight, tolerance, physiology, and other factors.

It’s also important to note that dosage changes the types of effects you experience. Most people experience more opioid-like effects when taking higher doses of kratom (5g and up), for example. At lower doses, people feel more stimulating and energy-boosting effects. If you want to use kratom as a stimulant, users recommend sticking to lower doses. If you want to enjoy sedative or pain relief effects, then users recommend higher doses.
