Construction workers near the Marine Parking Garage downtown reported the discovery of a body to the Juneau Police Department on Thursday morning, and responders found it to be the body of Joshua Raymond Jones, 24, according to a JPD release.
The workers called JPD at 9:48 a.m. Thursday, reporting that they found a body on the shoreline next to the Marine Parking Garage. Responders from JPD and Capital City Fire/Rescue arrived on the scene and identified it as Jones. Next of kin has been notified, according to the release.
Jones’ body was found on land, near the tideline, and a preliminary investigation showed that Jones had been in the water at one point. There were no signs of physical trauma to Jones’ body and the cause of death is currently unknown. JPD Lt. Krag Campbell said there was no obvious sign of drug or alcohol use.
Jones was wearing black clothing and a black-and-red backpack at the time. Campbell said the backpack contained miscellaneous personal items belonging to Jones. His body will be sent to the Alaska Medical Examiner’s office for an autopsy and to determine the cause of death.
