• On behalf of the Juneau Freewheelers Bicycle Club, we’d like to thank everyone for making the first Douglas Dirt Derby a successful event. More than 30 kids ages 5-12, participated in both a fun ride and timed bike races at Savviko Park and the Treadwell mine trails. These kids were introduced to the excitement of bike racing and encouraged to stay active through cycling. With the generous support of our sponsors, the race also raised more than $8,000 for diabetes prevention, advocacy and research through the American Diabetes Association.

The race would not have been possible without a core group of volunteers, including Brandee Gerkee, Kurt Iverson, Rob Welton and Dirk Miller. We’d also like to thank the many volunteers who turned out for race day to help kids register, guide racers on the course, take race photos, and serve snacks.

Finally, we want to give a heartfelt thanks to all of our business sponsors, including our primary sponsors: Goldstein Improvement Company, Sealaska Corporation, Juneau Radio Center, KTOO-FM, Bartlett Regional Hospital, University of Alaska Southeast, True North Federal Credit Union, Flying Squirrel Espresso, Rainforest Pediatric Care, Douglas Fourth of July Committee, Foggy Mountain Shop, Cycle Alaska, Coppa, Alaska Marine Lines and Alaska Litho.

We also received donations from SEARHC, Northrim Bank, Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 1281, AEL&P, Juneau Hydropower, Juneau Bone and Joint Center, Rainbow Foods, Mendenhall Flying Lions, Jared Lee DDS, IBEW 1547 Unit 103, Nugget Alaskan Outfitter, Heritage Coffee, Elgee Rehfeld, Northern Powerline Constructors, Pavitt’s, and Alaska Robotics.

Thanks again to everyone who helped with this year’s race. Stay tuned for the second annual Douglas Dirt Derby next spring, before the end of the school year.

John McConnochie, President, and Marc Wheeler, Race Director

• Thank you from Friends of the Flags —

As summer passes through our rearview mirror, the state flags along Egan Driver were removed for the off-season. We wanted to pass on our “thank yous” to our partners at Travel Juneau, Tourism Best Management Practices, Tyler Rental, Juneau Police Department, Department of Transportation, KINY-KSUP, CBJ Docks and Harbors, CBJ Engineering, and all the volunteers who met early Saturday morning to remove the flags. Thanks also to Holland America-Princess for providing storage for the flags during the winter. This is a team effort each and every year and we appreciate everyone’s assistance and support. We greatly appreciate all those who have donated to Friends of the Flags to continue the tradition of purchasing and displaying the flags along Egan Drive each summer.
