In September 2013, Larry Spencer, a long-time REALTOR® from Juneau and advocate for Southeast Alaska Board of REALTORS® concerns, passed away. The Southeast Alaska Board of REALTORS® wanted to do something to honor him. The result was the establishment of an on-going annual scholarship, called the Memorial Scholarship, with the 2014 award being the first and being in honor and memory of Larry.
The SEABR Memorial Scholarship is open to Southeast Alaska residents that are either graduating from a Southeast Alaska High School or Home School program and/or a current postsecondary student from Southeast Alaska. Applicants are asked to tell the Board about their activities and experiences in Southeast Alaska, their high school participation in extra-curricular activities and GPA, their intended course of study in the college of their choice and their goals for future employment upon graduation.
That first year the announcement was sent out to schools throughout Southeast Alaska, and there were 33 applications received. The award was to a graduate from Haines High School. Awards to students in Ketchikan, Juneau, Haines, Wrangell, Kake, and Thorne Bay have been awarded in the past several years.
“In 2018, the SEABR Memorial Scholarship Committee received 37 applications from students representing many of Southeast Alaska’s communities,” says Scholarship Committee Chairperson, Julie Moe. “Through the generous donations received from Southeast Alaska REALTORS® and the Affiliate members, with special mention to First Bank who has generously matched the funds that SEABR has raised, the committee was again able to select four recipients to receive $1000 each this year.”
After careful review of all the applications, the committee came to a unanimous decision to present a $1000 scholarship to each of the following students:
The 2018 Southeast Alaska Board of Realtors’ Memorial Scholarship recipient at Juneau Douglas High School recipient was Michael Cesar; the recipient from Thunder Mountain High School in Juneau was Rachel Macaulay; and Ketchikan High School had two recipients, Chasina Klein and Hannah Maxwell.
