Learn to fly fish, hunt for upland birds

The Alaska Department of Fish and Game is offering several summer workshops through Beyond BOW (Becoming an Outdoors-Woman.)

The first is advanced fly tying and is Wednesday, July 27, 5-8 p.m. at the Douglas Public Library. “Take your fly tying skills to the next level with this advanced clinic, focusing on flies for silver salmon,” says a flier from ADF&G. Learn how to tie some of the most effective flies for Southeast Alaska fishing. It costs $25.

The second class is upland bird hunting. “Whether you’re in search of grouse or ptarmigan, this class will set you off on the right alpine path toward hunting upland game birds. Leanr what to bring, what to look for, bird identification, signs and more,” says the flier. The course is all day in the Mount Roberts alpine Saturday, Aug. 6. It costs $35.

The third class is “psyched about silvers,” and focuses on fly fishing instruction for silver salmon. “This full-day fly fishing adventure will take you to a local stream where you’ll set your sights on chrome coho salmon,” the flier says. It’s all day Saturday, Aug. 27 and costs $55. Register at bow.adfg.alaska.gov and contact Abby Lowell at abby.lowell@alaska.gov with questions.
