Juneau scout replaces American Legion sign

The project was part of his path to the rank of Eagle Scout.

A Juneau Boy Scout visualized and completed a project replacing the American Legion sign outside Auke Bay Post 25 as part of the requirements to attain his Eagle Scout rank.

Kristofer Ely approached the American Legion last year with the project idea, said post commander Tom Dawson in an email. Ely planned and fundraised for the project before replacing the old sign with the new one.

“A welcome and professional addition to the Legion Post; a job well done,” Dawson said in an email.

Eagle Scout projects require the Scout to plan, organize, fundraise and execute a project serving the community.

Michio Hoshino, the late Japanese photographer, was honored this week by the Alaska Legislature in a citation that recognized his “breathtaking photos of Alaska’s wildlife and scenery” featured in magazines and books that have inspired “his countrymen to travel to Alaska for three generations, strengthening ties between the two regions.” Bob Sam of Sitka, a friend of Michio and the Hoshino family, proposed the citation that was sponsored by Sitka Rep. Jonathan Kreiss-Tomkins. Both flank Michio’s widow, Naoko Hoshino following a brief ceremony on Thursday. (Courtesy Photo / Peter Metcalfe)
