Fundraising for Carnegie Hall

Members of Alaskapella, Juneau’s community a cappella group, are in the final month of fundraising for their trip to Carnegie hall this spring.

The Alaskapellicans, which are a fiscal agency under the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council and are based at the University of Alaska Southeast, though they include non-students as members, were invited by Distinguished Concerts International New York City (DCINY) to participate in Total Vocal II, a performance of contemporary a cappella under the creative direction of arranger/producer Deke Sharon (The Sing Off, Pitch Perfect, etc.).

They’ll perform Sunday, March 20, 2016 at Carnegie Hall along with choristers from around the world to form the Distinguished Concerts Singers International. Deke Sharon will lead the performance and will serve as the clinician for the residency.

They’ll spend five days and four nights in New York City in preparation for their concert, rehearsing nine to ten hours a day.

Alaskapella’s sponsors so far include the Skaggs Foundation, Kathy Ruddy, “the incredibly supportive families of our touring members, and all of the people who have supported us by coming to and/or giving us gigs around town,” group founder and acting president Kristina Paulick wrote in an email.

People can donate to the trip through the JAHC, with “Alaskapellicans” written in the memo line of a check, or, if they give by credit card, along with a note saying the donation is to be used by the Alaskapellicans — otherwise it’ll be perceived as a general donation.

As of early January, the Alaskapellicans need to raise about $6,934.18, said Paulick. They won’t be able to take donations after Jan. 29, since they’ll have made their final payment by that point.
