Community calendar of upcoming events

This is a calendar updated daily of upcoming local events during the coming days provided by the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council, and other contributors. Submissions for events can be sent to editor@juneauempire.com. They should include the date, time, location, short summary of the event, a website and/or social media page for the event if applicable, if an admission fee is required, and a contact for people to obtain more information. Submissions are not guaranteed of inclusion and may be edited for length or content. The calendar is also published in the print editions of the Juneau Empire, and submissions for those should be received by 9 a.m. Monday for Wednesday’s paper and 9 a.m. Thursday for Saturday’s paper.

This summer the Juneau-Douglas City Museum will host a series of bi-weekly open mic hours as part of our summer exhibition Wild Joys: Creating Community Through the Performing Arts. TOPS Club (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly), 5-6:15 p.m., Juneau Public Health Center, 3412 Glacier Hwy.

Purpose is to help and support members as they take off and keep off pounds sensibly. Weigh-in at 5 p.m., group program at 5:15 p.m. First meeting is free. More information at www.tops.org.

2nd and 4th Friday Social Dance Shindig, 6 p.m.-8 p.m. Alaska Club Downtown, 641 W. Willoughby Ave.

Drawing from a range of dance styles, Daniel and Andi will teach fundamentals of partner dancing and next-level skills that will increase your confidence on the dance floor. This month, we are teaching “Switch Dancing” – how to move fluidly between leading and following in a single dance. No experience or partner needed. Arrive early to change shoes and warm up. Enjoy piano recitals by some of the top pianists throughout the year, curated by Jon Hays. These recitals are held at the Juneau Arts and Culture Center on the community’s Wilhelm Schimmel piano. Summer Solstice Fire Ritual, 7-8:30 p.m. Noyes Pavilion, 11220 Glacier Hwy.

Gather around the fire with Kelsey Clark & Cassandra Jostes to welcome the return of summer. Meditation, song, offerings, and intention setting. Together, we’ll give thanks for the gifts of summer and set our intentions for the months ahead. A sacred space for storytelling, life lessons, and sisterhood. Contact 907-723-8188.

Do the annual Only Fools Run at Night! Benefits high school cross country team. 5k and 1-mile distances. Starts and ends at Centennial Hall. Prizes for best team and solo costumes. Costume judging at 8:15 p.m. Race starts at 9:00 p.m.

Summer Solstice Music Festival, noon-10:30 p.m., Áak’w Landing.

Free music in the afternoon with Luke and Heather, 2-5 p.m., Crystal Saloon, 218 Front St.

Catch Luke and Heather in their show “Music in the Afternoons” at The Crystal Saloon Mondays and Wednesdays from 2 to 5 p.m. through June 11. They are featuring two of their projects: a jazz duo featuring piano, sultry vocals, and drums, and their project Poetry Police, showcasing original tunes in a kinetic folk-punk style. Artists of All Nations is a free open studio opportunity in the Main Hall at the JACC from 1 – 5 pm, usually on the last Sunday of the month. Work together on your art.

Sundays with the Juneau Symphony, 1-2 p.m. Weekly on KRNN.

Sundays with the Juneau Symphony is the place for your local connection to classical music.
