A big thank you to Juneau for drag show success

Last Saturday, about 150 people crammed into the Rendezvous to watch nine local drag queens and drag kings perform the holiday-themed show, Twas the Drag Before Christmas. The energy on stage and in the crowd was electric, the drinks were flowing and all had a great time!

The holidays can be a tough time for many people, certainly for lots of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer) people who may not have family support, an accepting workplace or friends who love them for who they are. Many other Juneauites are far from their hometowns and families and miss them especially around this time of year. We all have experienced many losses recently, here in our small town and worldwide and we continue to grieve.

When planning this show, I wanted to bring the community together, across all lines, to celebrate the holiday festivities together. With lots of camp, comedy and even a sexy lingerie fashion show, I believe we achieved that goal. Hearing 150 people erupting in laughter and applause is not only exciting, but it is healing, inspiring and downright uplifting!

On behalf of all the performers and volunteers who made the night so wonderful, thank you Juneau for accepting our holiday gift to you — a fabulously fierce, free drag show! We will do it again in a few months, so stay tuned. (You can follow me at facebook.com/GigiMonroe to keep up to date on future shows!)

Lots of love,

Gigi Monroe aka James Hoagland,

Douglas
