Opinion: Support Alyse Galvin in the primary

I support Alyse Galvin in the Aug. 21 primary and her attempt to unseat U.S. Rep. Don Young as Alaska’s representative to Congress. I like her strong interest in education and appreciated her opposition to the appointment of Betsy DeVos. I like that she would fight to make health insurance work rather than try to dismantle what we already have.

As much as I have disliked Young and his politics over the years I have always thought that he had principles and that he was willing to speak up for what he believed. In fact I often thought he was rude and abrupt in speaking up. But now all of a sudden with President Donald Trump running roughshod over the Congress and American values, Young is impersonating a pussy cat. I understand that he wants a strong military, oil and gas development and low taxes, but the Congress can now get those things without tolerating the president’s behavior.

I realize it’s a hard road ahead to unseat Young, but I think the time has come and that Galvin is the one to do it. I encourage people to vote for her in the primary and in the subsequent general election.
