Opinion: State supreme court made an outrageous choice

It’s sad the Alaska Supreme Court preferred saving money on reprinting ballots over saving democracy.

It is outrageous for our elections officials to decide on their own what party affiliation goes next to the name of which candidate. Some time back in June, when they had ample opportunity to discuss this with candidates, but chose not to, either Lt. Gov. Kevin Meyer or Elections Division director Gail Fenumiai had the bright idea to independently select a party letter to go next to the names of Alyse Galvin and Dr. Al Gross. I have closely watched Galvin’s campaign and firmly believe that she is as independent as she claims, not totally agreeing with either party on all points and always stating her own mind. It is my impression that the same can be said for Gross. And it is sad that the Alaska Supreme Court preferred saving money on reprinting ballots over saving democracy.

Before we know it, some city worker could start putting party affiliations next to assembly candidates’ names in our non-partisan elections.
