Opinion: State income tax is the answer in Alaska

A tax would prevent Gov. Dunleavy’s draconian cuts.

Reading Feb. 14’s Juneau Empire coverage of the cuts proposed in Gov. Mike Dunleavy’s budget, it’s evident that a statewide income tax is the answer to preventing these draconian cuts.

[Governor proposes cutting almost half of university’s total operating budget]

I would willing pay income tax to help maintain Medicaid coverage for 20,000 of my Southeast neighbors, to maintain a healthy University of Alaska system that educates my grandkids for jobs in the state, and to keep the ferry system running for family members living in rural towns in Southeast. Paying out past and future full PFDs is not going to offset these proposed severe wounds to our economy.
