Opinion: New JACC isn’t worth it

You’ll be asked to subsidize this monster forever more.

Once again we are being asked to support building a huge expensive complex that we cannot afford and do not need. I read the My Turn by Paulette Simpson a few days ago and was very impressed with her figures and sound reasoning on why this building is not needed. She did her homework well, and I agree we should step back and rethink what type of building we need, if any. Somehow I cannot picture thousands of people flying here from Hoonah, Angoon, Haines and Skagway to attend a performance or book convention.

You the taxpayer will be asked to subsidize this monster forever more. It will cost thousands of dollars a month to heat, light, staff and maintain a building this size. The Sealaska Heritage Institute plans on building a large arts campus in the downtown area. Why would we want to compete against that? With a $5.6 million federal grant, it will be great for the Juneau economy, and I support it.
