Opinion: Message to banks: Cut it out or we’ll cut it up

If we follow the money we can see just how dependent Big Oil is on four of our biggest banks.

Thank you for reporting on the Willow oil project decision this past week.

The political pressure to approve this huge oil development shows just how powerful the oil industry is, pursuing their business model to eke out every penny of profit for as long as they can regardless of the climate chaos that grows more intense each year.

Big Oil is unlikely to change its business model, but if we follow the money we can see just how dependent Big Oil is on four of our biggest banks. Wells Fargo, Bank of America, Citi, and Chase have together financed the fossil fuel industry with over $1 trillion since the Paris Climate Agreement.

These banks are profiting from the climate crisis, threatening the future for our children and grandchildren. Many of us are customers of Wells Fargo, Bank of America (think Alaska Airlines Mileage Plan Visa) and Citi (think Costco Visa). We can let the big banks know that we’re willing to cut up our cards and move our money if they don’t stop financing Big Oil.

That message will be the focus of street theater at noon on Tuesday: “The Great Alaska Credit Card Chainsaw Massacre” will be staged by 350Juneau on March 21, across from Wells Fargo bank on Second Street in downtown Juneau. Come down for some entertainment as we send a message to the big banks: Cut it out or we’ll cut it up.
