Opinion: Government should not require masks

I do not need the government controlling what I wear or my health decisions.

I would like to respond to Ms. Dulebohn’s opinion about masks in the State Office Building. She must know that stairs are always available and take a lot less time than standing 20 minutes to wait for an elevator. I worked in the building for many years and walked from the fourth floor (where I parked) to the 11th floor five days a week.

The public seems to want the government to guarantee they will live forever. We drive cars when people are killed more frequently than the pandemic virus, and we eat unhealthy foods that cause diabetes and heart disease that also kill more people than the pandemic. Everyone who catches the virus does not die. They may be quite ill, but unless there are underlying causes, the virus kills very few people. I certainly think that people who are at risk because of underlying illnesses should not go to public places. Does the office building allow working from home?

Because of an accident earlier in the year and because we travel I have had at least 11 negative COVID-19 tests since Jan. 1. Some before and some after being vaccinated. Some before and some after I was injured. Will I ever die from covid? I have no idea. I am 80 years old and I will definitely die of something, but I do not need the government controlling what I wear or my health decisions.

Thank you
