Every day, there's a customer who calls a florist and gets completely
tongue-tied.
It's not due to a phobia of phones, flowers or florists - it's a
communications barrier. Most consumers are not familiar with the
names of the wide range of flowers available.
By following some simple tips, you can order flowers for your wedding
with confidence and few surprises.
The American Floral Marketing Council offers some advice: Before
contacting your florist, select date, time and place of your wedding
and reception, and know your colors and styles of gowns.
Then arrange a preliminary meeting. Discuss your general design
ideas and begin to develop a budget that will meet your needs.
As you get closer to the date, meet again with the florist to complete
the details. The florist should have specific suggestions that fit
both your taste and budget. Being in Juneau is not an issue, said
local florists. Even if all flowers have to be flown in, "I
can get basically anything you want," said Debbie Augustus
at Martha's Flowers & Weddings.
"I get flowers from Hawaii; I order all my roses from Equador...
pretty much anything you want, I can get you."
If the florist has never worked at your ceremony or reception site,
make sure he or she visits the location. Consult selection guides
for ideas. Your florist has bridal books to offer guidelines for
colors, flowers, styles, designs and flower varieties. Debbie Augustus
at Martha's Flowers said some people opt for silk flowers, especially
if there are people with allergies in the wedding party.
If you have any unusual or personal requests, don't hesitate to
ask. Sketch ideas, cut out pictures or take photos of flowers and
share them with your florist. By communicating with your florist,
you can be confident that your wedding flowers will be just what
you hoped for.
