The University
UAS combines time-proven methods of learning with an innovative curriculum that relies heavily on the use of technology, fieldwork and undergraduate research to create a new century liberal arts approach. Our graduates are excellent co e individuals to explore and refine their unique talents and interests. UAS students discover their career paths through scientific and literary exploration, business internships, exposure to civic leaders and through artistic expression. Our small class sizes and engaged faculty allow us to employ a more personal approach that ensures students are being challenged academically and that the needs of each student are being met. It is our mission to help students turn their passion into meaningful and fulfilling careers.
Location
Juneau's population is approximately 32,000. It is the third most populous city in the state and largest in Southeast Alaska. UAS is surrounded by the Tongass National Forest, which contains the world's last great expanse of ancient temperate rainforest. We average 56 inches of annual precipitation. The winters are surprisingly warm with average temperatures in the high 20s and summer temperatures average in the high 60s.
Juneau has several daily flights to Anchorage and Seattle and is accessible by plane and ferry, but not by road. The state runs a year-round ferry service between Bellingham, Washington and Southeast Alaska cities. Those who bring cars must use the barge service or the Alaska Marine Highway System. The ferries provide a spectacular cruise through the beautiful Inside Passage.
The main campus is located 11 miles from downtown Juneau between the shores of Auke Lake and Auke Bay. The campus is often referred to as the most beautiful place in Juneau. One glance across Auke Lake to the Mendenhall Towers, which cradle the Mendenhall Glacier, is all it takes for someone to know they've found the right place.
Academic Program
UAS operates on a semester system, with the fall semester beginning in early September and the spring semester beginning in mid-January.
A minimum of 120-semester credits is required to complete a baccalaureate degree program, a minimum of 60-semester credits to complete an associate degree program, and a minimum of 30-semester credits to complete a certificate program.
Facilities
The newly completed Student Recreation Center will open in the summer of 2005 and will house the basketball court, suspended running track, climbing wall, weight training and cardiovascular equipment, plus student lounge with a big screen TV, pool tables, dance floor, movie screen and surround-sound system.
The Technical Education Center is located in downtown Juneau on the waterfront. It serves as the base for the vocational/technical programs such as auto, construction and power technology.
The Egan Library contains more than 420,000 volumes. This award-winning facility offers seating for more than 200 users, the most current computer technology for access to information, and extended hours for student study. The Learning Center, which offers tutoring programs and academic assistance, is also housed in the Egan library.
The campus operates on a wireless network, which gains students access to the UAS network, Internet, and email from virtually anywhere on campus.
Housing
Banfield Hall is reserved for freshman, but on-campus housing, including apartment-style housing, is available to all students. Meal plans are required for residents of Banfield Hall.

Others exempt from nonresident fees are residents of British Columbia, Yukon, Northwest and Nunavut Territories, active military stationed in Alaska and their dependents, and residents of several foreign sister cities. UAS also participates in the Western Undergraduate Exchange (WUE) program for all degree programs. Students from the 14 member states are eligible for WUE tuition rates.

Financial Aid
Fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) at www.fafsa.ed.gov and visit our financial aid Web site at www.uas.alaska.edu/financial_aid.
UAS participates in the Federal Pell Grant, Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant, Federal Stafford Student Loan, and Federal Work-Study programs in addition to state student loan, family loan, and grant programs. Most aid is awarded on the basis of financial need.
Some scholarships, however, are based on academic potential and performance. The deadline for merit-based UAS scholarships is early February. To apply for need-based programs, students should request a packet from the financial aid office.
Faculty
UAS has an excellent student to faculty ratio of 12 to 1. The class size for lower division courses averages between 15-20 students. Due to the small intimate nature of the campus, faculty play an integral role in their students' success and offer individual attention often unheard of at larger liberal arts institutions.
Demographics
UAS has a total student population of approximately 4,100 students. The main campus in Juneau comprises 3,000 of those students. 65 percent of students are female and 35 percent are male. About 30 percent of the student body is comprised of people of Alaska Native, Asian, Pacific Island, African and Hispanic ancestry.
