It was a sunny day in Juneau in late 1950s when Susan Woods (Loidhamer), owner of J & J Deli, heard a loud bang from an upstairs apartment in a building in downtown Juneau. She ran downstairs to discover a bus had crashed into Rushers Juneau Young Hardware Store, where her father was co-owner. Although her brother, Edward Loidhamer, was working at the gun counter at the time, he escaped without a scratch, as did her father, who was standing nearby. The bus lost its brakes after turning onto Seward Street by the Capitol. The bus driver was intent on steering the bus into the harbor, but he lost control of the speeding vehicle and crashed into the building.
