JUNEAU - A suicidal 49-year-old Pelican man did not harm himself Monday after a Village Public Safety Officer convinced the man to surrender during a standoff Monday, according to the Alaska State Troopers.
The man, who is not being identified for medical confidentiality reasons, was transported to Bartlett Regional Hospital in Juneau, where he was evaluated Monday.
The state troopers were contacted at about 10:45 a.m. Monday and informed that a male subject had barricaded himself within a boat in the Pelican harbor and threatened to harm himself if specific demands were not met. The man demanded a representative of the Governor's Office assure him that he would be transported to Seattle for medical treatment at Harbor View Medical Center, according to the state troopers.
The VPSO told troopers that the man had a .22-caliber rifle tied around his neck with a string. The officer was able to talk the man into seeking medical aide at the Pelican health clinic prior to the arrival of state troopers from Juneau and Hoonah.
The VPSO position was filled roughly two months ago after being vacant for several years, according to the state troopers.
Pelican is a fishing community located on the east side of Lisianski Inlet on Chichagof Island, located about 70 miles from Juneau by air.
