Coast Guard blanket drive begins today

JUNEAU - The Coast Guard cutter Liberty's annual Blanket, Coat and New Toy Drive for Southeast Alaska is set to begin today.

The community will be able to donate gently-used coats, blankets and new toys through Dec. 1 at collection bins at Costco, Wal-Mart, Safeway, Alaskan & Proud, Super Bear Supermarket, Nugget Mall and the Federal Building.

The crew of the Liberty will then deliver the donated items to the communities of Hoonah, Angoon, Kake, Pelican and Elfin Cove between Dec. 8 and 12.

"It is an honor and privilege to participate in this year's Blanket, Coat and Toy Drive," stated Lt. Cmdr. Jon Kreischer, the commanding officer of the Liberty, in a press release. "Last year's drive was a huge success, and I can attest to the overwhelming gratitude from each community for the donations. I would like to thank all those volunteering their time and efforts to make this drive possible and the residents of Juneau for their annual support of this worthy cause."
