Assembly to hear port expansion proposal

JUNEAU - The Juneau Assembly will hear a proposal from a private developer tonight to expand cruise ship docks in the Port of Juneau.

The work session begins at 6 p.m. in the Assembly Chambers at City Hall.

Franklin Dock Enterprises will make its proposal to the Assembly to build a Panamax dock at Gold Creek, near the old subport lot downtown.

The city Docks and Harbors Board made its proposal Oct. 26 to expand the city-owned Steamship docks to accommodate Panamax ships.

The Assembly is expected to request up to $10 million in marine passenger fees from the Legislature this year to start a project. Members of the board said at last month's work session that they first must agree on a project before requesting funds from the state.
