Alaska State Troopers and Fairbanks police increased security at the courthouse and at Hammers' residence afterward.
Cunningham was arrested Saturday near Fairbanks International Airport.
Cunningham said at his arraignment Sunday that he works part-time at the airport.
He was charged with terroristic threatening, a felony.
On Sunday, Hammers conducted several arraignments at the courthouse. He called a recess at 3:30 p.m. to allow Magistrate Beth Spalding to hear Cunningham's case. She set his preliminary hearing for Nov. 9.
Assistant District Attorney Jason Weiner requested bail be set at $150,000. Weiner said Cunningham has an arrest record.
"In this case he threatened a justice member's family for doing their job," Weiner said.
Troopers would not release additional information about the letter addressed to Hammers. Trooper Allen Carvajal said the threat was taken seriously because of the nature of the threat and that it was directed at a court officer.
