Alaska Democrats forward 3 names to replace Foster

ANCHORAGE - The Alaska Democratic Party has sent three names to Gov. Parnell as possible replacements for Richard Foster, the Nome state representative who died Oct. 13.

The nominees for District 39 include Foster's son, Neal Foster, a member of the Nome City Council.

The others are Ralph "Weaver" Ivanoff of Unalakleet, a commercial fisherman and a tribal administrator for more than 14 years, and Sam Towarak of Unalakleet, an educator in northwest Alaska for more than 20 years.

Parnell will forward a nominee to the House Democratic Legislative Caucus. House Democrats must confirm the governor's pick.

District 39 includes Inupiaq Eskimo villages from St. Lawrence Island to the Seward Peninsula, Nome and Unalakleet, as well as Yup'ik villages in Hooper Bay, Chevak and Lower Yukon.
