James Lyle Scoles

Longtime Juneau resident James Lyle Scoles died peacefully at his Juneau home on Oct. 12, 2009, after several years of declining health. He was 65.

Born Sept. 11, 1944, in Orange County, Calif., to Paul Beach Scoles and Rosemary Thomason, he attended Chico State and California State University and worked for the Alaska Department of Corrections. He was a Juneau resident for 21 years.

In 1968, he came to Alaska, where he worked at Scotty Creek Lodge on the Alaska Highway for a year before working for the Department of Highways in Tok. He decided to go back to school and returned to Alaska with his degree in 1971. He put his education to work for the Department of Corrections, where he worked for many years both at the Lemon Creek Correctional Center and for the central office of the department. He retired from the state in the late-1980s and moved to Sisters, Ore., returning to Alaska in 2002.

"Jim was known for his gentle nature and stubborn ways," his family said. "He was generous to a fault to his friends and family."

He was preceded in death by his father, Paul Beach Scoles Jr.; mother, Rosemary Scoles and husband, Thomason; and sister, Marinell Catherine Scoles.

He is survived by his life partner, Ramona Green, of Juneau; brother, Paul Beach Scoles III, of Washington; son, Jason Scoles, of Georgia; daughter, Jennifer Scoles, of California; nephew, Jonathan Truelove, of California; and their families.

As per his wishes, no service will be held. His family may be contacted at scuba_jason@yahoo.com.
