How to make a semi-functional beer keg costume for under $20* in less than 48 hours

Materials:

All purpose flour, duct tape, silver metallic paint, knife, paint brush, large cardboard box, salt, recycled newspaper, no shame and a Camelbak®.

Step 1:

Mold your cardboard box into a cylinder using a rolling technique and ample amounts of duct tape. Use knife to cut armholes and decorative handholds.

Step 2:

Create paper-mache paste by boiling water and adding one-part flour to two-parts water. Simmer for two minutes until smooth. Add a tablespoon of salt to prevent mold. Allow time to cool before use.

Step 3:

Tear newspaper into strips. If you can't find a real newspaper, use the Juneau Empire.

Step 4:

Apply paste to newspaper and place on cardboard cylinder in a crosshatch pattern for extra durability.

Step 5:

Let dry. (Note: A simple hairdryer can make the process go quicker.)

Step 6:

If you've made it this far, congratulate yourself with cold beer.

Step 7:

Apply second coat of paper-mache. (Note: This step can be avoided if scheduled time of Halloween party is creeping up.)

Step 8:

Paint metallic silver color (acrylic works well). Let dry and reapply.

Step 9:

Add decorations to make keg unique, such as stickers of your favorite local brewery or beer, or paint your favorite local distributor's keg markings and/or create a fake police department keg registration decoration and receipt.

Step 10:

Fill Camelbak® with favorite beverage, hang around neck with simple strap, and enjoy the festivities.

Note: If people can't tell it's supposed to be a keg, glue a few buttons on it and say you're a robot.

* May exceed $20 if you don't already own a Camelbak® or if your buddy can't find his in time.

Costume contests, dancing and live music on the agenda for Oct. 31

Tricksters and treat lovers are lucky enough to have Halloween fall on Friday this year and the nightlife establishments across town are gearing up for one of Juneau's biggest annual celebrations.

Whether you're into dancing to a dynamic DJ, dressing to the nines and looking to win some extra cash, or getting funky to some Halloween bluegrass music, the capital has all sorts of events planned for Oct. 31.

Below is a brief synopsis of the festivities.

Marlintini's Lounge, 9121 Glacier Highway

The Mendenhall Valley bar is claiming it will host Juneau's Biggest Halloween Bash on Friday, Oct. 31. There is no cover charge.

With only days before the historic presidential election, Marlintini's is offering a $200 cash prize for the best look-alike of Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

"We always try to be on the cutting edge of Halloween, of course," owner Ethan Billings said. "And to get in the spirit of the election."

Billings said he personally asked the Palin family if it was OK to host the look-alike contest and said he got permission.

"There's been some of these contests around the nation so why shouldn't Juneau do it?" he said. "It's just something to do to get people excited about Halloween."

There will also be cash prizes at Marlintini's for the best group, couple and overall costumes. Patrons will also be able to win door prizes by playing such games as apple bobbing and "sandwich queen," participating in a dance contest and more. DJ Dan will be rockin' the house from 9 p.m. until bar closing.

Any partygoer that comes by after 9 p.m. will get a free ticket to the Ian Bagg comedy show at Marlintini's on Nov. 7 and 8.

Doc Water's, Merchants Wharf Building

The waterfront pub is having its last hurrah on Friday night before closing its doors for the final time. Come boogie to live music by Little Black Raincloud Co. and other local musicians in the extended dance area. There will be going-out-of-business drink specials for $3 and that will decrease to $2 at midnight. Get a Doc Water's T-shits for $1 or hats for $2.

Imperial Billiard & Bar, 241 Front St.

The downtown bar will host a costume contest at an undetermined time when there are plenty of patrons in costume ready to win prizes. The bar will have a variety of drink specials available, including witches brew, along with live DJ music and dirty dancing into the early morning hours.

Rendezvous, 184 S. Franklin St.

Rock out all night to costume karaoke at the downtown hot spot with the "most kick-ass bartenders in town" where there is "no waiting for drinks." Two Eaglecrest season passes are on the line for best costumes. Details for the costume contest are yet to be announced. There will also be drink specials, door prizes and other prizes available.

The Alaskan Hotel & Bar, 167 S. Franklin St.

The Greatest Alaska Halloween Party will kick off on Friday around 9 p.m. with live music from The Great Alaska Bluegrass Band at the downtown bar.

Jaded, 51 Egan Drive

Salsa Borealis will be headlining the Haunted Halloween Party at the bar inside the Goldbelt Hotel, held from 9:30 p.m. to the witching hour. Patrons are asked to "come dressed to kill, thrill and delight." There is a $5 cover charge per person.

Squires Rest, 11806 Glacier Highway

Come out to Auke Bay to boogie for the Love Life Music concert and CD release party beginning at 10 p.m. on Friday. Local drummer Todd Vierra and guitarist Dave Down will join bassist Milo Matthews and vocalist Shawn Zuke of Anchorage for the performance. Drink specials will be available and there is no cover charge.

The Island Pub, 915 Third St., Douglas

People are encouraged to come down to the Douglas Island pub in full costume for a Halloween party environment. Along with the regular full menu, there will also be food and drink specials available.

Triangle Club, 251 Front St.

Drop by downtown's smartest bar to play Halloween trivia on Buzztime against fellow intellectuals across the country. The bar will have food and extra snacks available and expects to have lots of people in costumes. There will also be drink specials available.

Viking Lounge, 218 Front St.

Check out the costume contest with cash prizes that will kick off around midnight. There will also be karaoke in the front and dancing in the back beginning around 9 p.m. The bartenders also will be mixing up some Halloween shot specials to get the party going.

PP's Douglas Inn, 915 3rd St., Douglas

The bartender stated emphatically that "there will be partying for Halloween" at the Douglas Island bar still referred to by some as Louie's.

Henry's Food and Spirits, 9109 Mendenhall Mall Road

A costume contest for cash and other prizes will kick off sometime between 11 p.m. and midnight at the bar on the north end of the Mendenhall Mall. The Friday night bartender said she is also working up some Halloween-type drink specials.

Latinos Restaurant, 115 S. Franklin St.

For those interested in a family-oriented and non-alcohol environment, come check out the grand opening party on Friday for one of Juneau's newest restaurants that serves authentic Cuban and Caribbean food. Latinos Restaurant, located in the former Elks Club building, is now open for lunch and will also be unveiling its full dinner menu.

On Friday there will be Halloween treats for kids, and a family-oriented dance party will kick off at 9 p.m., going until around 3 a.m. The new restaurant also caters to the late-night bar crowd and will be serving food on Friday and Saturday nights after the bars close.

Chef Argel Cervantes, an immigrant from Cuba, has more than 13 years experience in the kitchen and has worked for the tourism industry in Cuba for many years. His specialty is the Cuban sandwich combo.

Pre-Halloween

For those looking to get a little pre-Halloween celebration in, George Kuhar and Bridget Cross will be performing live music to "Nosferatu," the 1922 silent film version of Dracula, beginning at 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 30, at the Juneau Arts & Culture Center.
