Natural gas test cuts use 3 percent

ANCHORAGE - A two-hour test of natural gas conservation by utilities in Anchorage and Southcentral Alaska reduced consumption by about 3 percent.

Anchorage Mayor Dan Sullivan said Wednesday's test shows people would conserve in the event of an emergency.

The Anchorage Daily News reports the Homer Electric Association had the biggest reduction at nearly 7 percent. Elmendorf Air Force Base cut nearly 5 percent.

Others taking part included the Chugach Electric Association, Municipal Light and Power, Matanuska Electric Association, Enstar, and the Mat-Su and Kenai Peninsula Boroughs.

Residents were asked to lower thermostats and hot water heaters and postpone washing dishes and clothes - steps they might be asked to take during extreme cold.
