Police officer to run for Anchorage mayor

Lt. Paul Honeman, the department's spokesman for the past three years, announced his campaign intentions Friday, the day he retired after 22 years with the force.

Honeman said he plans to file his intent to run with the Alaska Public Offices Commission on Monday.

Mark Begich, the current mayor, is competing for U.S. Sen. Ted Stevens' seat in the November election.

Whatever the result, Begich can't run for mayor again because of term limits.

Others expressed interest in seeking the seat, including Assembly members Sheila Selkregg and Matt Claman, former Assemblyman Dan Sullivan and former Anchorage Rep. Eric Croft.
