Last Friday we were overwhelmed by the generosity of fishermen, local businesses and all of Juneau in helping make our Fish Aid benefit for Gulf of Mexico fishermen a success. We were able to raise over $19,000 which will go directly to help the fishing industry in the affected Gulf states, through the Alaska Fishing Industry Relief Mission. We thank the Aleutian Pribilof Islands Community Development Association for matching the proceeds from the admission and auction to attain this level.

We thank the following persons and organizations for helping us plan and conduct the event: Juneau Arts and Humanities Council; Salsa Borealis; Alaska Brewing; The Hangar restaurant; Centennial Hall; Albert McDonnell; Sean Tracey; Heather Haugland; Shawn McCole; Mike Sullivan; Don Drew and KTOO; the Alaska Seafood Marketing Institute; Caren Robinson; Southeast Alaska Herring Seiners Marketing Association; Southeast Alaska Fishermen's Alliance; Southeast Alaska Seiners; and United Fishermen of Alaska.

We were overwhelmed with donations to the silent auction event and thank the bidders, and the following donors of art, products and services: Allan and Elton Engstrom; Radio Shack; Gourmet Alaska; Anchor Electric; Maritime Hydraulics; Acme Welding; Nugget Alaskan Outfitter; Harri's Plumbing; Foggy Mountain Shop; Rainbow Foods; Ocean Beauty Seafoods; Juneau Artists Gallery; Alan Munro; Ray Troll; Rie Munoz; Chas Burke; Decker Gallery; Phyllice Bradner; Cindy Burchfield; Kevin Curry; Dianne Anderson; Michelle Morrell; Nell McConahey; David Riccio; Paula Wright; Jack Hermle; Beth Kerttula; Diane Baxter; Bob Tkacz's Laws for the Sea; Southeast Panhandlers Motorcycle Club; Bear's Lair; Petro Marine; and Capitol Arms. This overwhelming support in donations has likely caused us to omit some here; we thank you too.

AFIRM was formed by the fishing industry with the inspiration of the office of Sen. Lisa Murkowski. Alaska fishermen have been working arm-in-arm long term with Gulf shrimpers and fishermen in our efforts to differentiate wild Alaskan and U.S. seafood from farmed and imported competition. Without this help from the Gulf states and their delegations, Alaska fishermen may not have seen the price increases that most salmon fleets received this year. In appreciation of this spirit of unity, we urge other Alaska fishing communities and organizations to join in our efforts.

Most importantly, we thank the commercial fishermen, crew members and fishing families of Juneau for the success of the Juneau Fish Aid event.
