Towns receive Alaska Native library grants

JUNEAU - The federal Institute of Museum and Library Services has awarded museum services grants to three Southeast Alaska entities.

Chilkoot Indian Association of Haines, working with the Haines Borough Public Library, will receive $149,998 for youth projects, films to document elders' knowledge, and technology training for patrons.

Chilkat Indian Village in Haines will receive $149,993 for a project to enhance literacy and preserve history for tribal members through the purchase of library materials, creation of a tribal document section, and cultural programs.

The Organized Village of Kasaan, in Ketchikan, will receive $121,145 to ensure the sustainability of its library through partnerships.

Ahtna of Anchorage will receive a fourth grant, in the amount of $149,840, to digitize cassette recordings and VHS recordings of elders from the 1970s and later.
