Supervisor reaffirms Logjam sale decision

KETCHIKAN - Tongass National Forest Supervisor Forrest Cole has reaffirmed his June decision to authorize cutting 73 million board feet of timber on Prince of Wales Island.

Several environmental groups have appealed the Logjam timber sale and are awaiting a ruling from Regional Forester Denny Bschor.

They want a reduction in the amount of timber to be cut, saying the area is a key watershed for salmon and steelhead trout, and a critical old-growth habitat for sustaining deer and other wildlife.

Cole, however, said such a reduction would not provide enough stability for the logging industry.

The regional forester has another three weeks to decide on the appeals.
