Getting a handle on Thorne Bay energy

It was with interest I browsed the reader comments regarding the Prince of Wales Island northern intertie. The problem with most of the comments is that the article was not complete and did not tell the whole story.

The Forest Service knew about the project and got updates monthly from AP&T for four years in advance. An inter-office squabble between Ranger Jay Anderson and his contracts officer, Maloney Slayton, is what stopped the project as reported by folks in the Thorne Bay Ranger Office. No other power line has been required to do an environmental assessment on Prince of Wales Island, including the first portion of the intertie that went 30 miles to Thorne Bay, the Thorne Bay Ranger Station and Forest Service.

The entire problem lies with the Thorne Bay Ranger station and an internal power struggle that will cost the residents of Naukati Bay and Coffman Cove $500,000 in excessive power cost. I thought our push was to do everything we could to get off of fossil fuel. This is a much larger story than the Juneau Empire had space to print. The whole story and the politics behind it are amazing. Ranger Cole needs to get a handle on his folks in Thorne Bay.
