The Juneau Soccer Club Riptides, an under-17 boys team, opened play Tuesday in the Alaska State Cup in Wasilla with a 11-5 victory over the Fairbanks Flaming Lizards.

Dominic Smith led the Riptides' scoring barrage with four goals.

Joey Croteau and Fernando Valero added two goals each while Colin Flynn, Sam Greely and Elliot Ford all contributed goals for the Riptides.

Sam Post stopped five shots in goal for the win.

The Riptides raced to a 4-0 lead and held a 6-2 advantage at halftime.

Juneau plays its second preliminary game on Thursday.

In the under-14 division, the JSC Jambaars blanked the Fairbanks Eclipse Phoenix '93 7-0 on Thursday.

Rhett Bennett and Paul Bertholl each scored twice while Andy Lawson, Peter Jorgensen, Riley Paul also scored in the win.

Lawson added two assists while Ben Gelotte and Max Smith posted on assist each in the win.

Taylor Lehnhart earned the shutout in goal.

Alex Kelley, Lawson, Gelotte, Cole Carnahan, Smith, Jorgensen, Raphael Betit, Bennett, Paul and Ryan McCusker racked up a total of 36 shots for the Jambaars.

The Jambaars take on the Anchorage Youth Soccer Club Reds.
