Body of drowning victim recovered

JUNEAU - The Coast Guard said the body of a 13-year-old boy who drowned in the Beaufort Sea while trying to save his father has been recovered.

Petty Officer Jeremy Dawkins said volunteers located the body late Wednesday within a mile of where the older man fell overboard in Camden Bay. The father's body was recovered Tuesday.

The boy and his parents were headed from their home in Kaktovik to Demarcation Point when the man fell overboard Sunday evening as he was trying to secure his 20-foot boat in stormy waters. His son dived in after him. When neither reappeared the mother took the boat to shore for help.

The victims' names have not been released.

The Coast Guard was contacted by North Slope Borough Search and Rescue to provide helicopters to assist them. It was the Coast Guard's first-ever mission for its new Arctic operations base in Barrow.
