Jury will decide if woman had sex with boy
Closing arguments wrap up in case of alleged sexual abuse
The jury is out in the trial of Lindi Vinje, a 38-year-old woman accused of having sex with a 15-year-old boy.
The state says Vinje sexually abused a minor when she had sex with the alleged victim earlier this summer at her home on North Douglas Island.
Closing arguments wrapped up Wednesday afternoon in Juneau Superior Court. The jury is expected to continue deliberating and possibly come to a decision today.
Assistant District Attorney Jack Schmidt told jurors Vinje had violated the victim's and his mother's trust by getting drunk on a mixture of alcohol and medication, and then having sex with the boy.
"You need to hold her accountable for violating that trust," Schmidt said.
Vinje was arrested after the victim's mother reported her to police. Jurors heard a recording between the two women that police secretly made before Vinje was arrested. During his closing arguments, Schmidt read aloud some of the things Vinje said on the tape, including:
"He kinda took advantage of me but I knew what ... was going on."
"He definitely knows how to move."
And referring to how close a relationship Vinje had with the alleged victim - "I (had sex with) my own kid."
Vinje's attorney, Eric Hedland, tried to portray his client as the real victim, emphasizing Vinje's testimony that she was unconscious during sexual intercourse.
Hedland also told jurors that the alleged victim's testimony was inconsistent, saying he had incorrectly described one of Vinje's tattoos and the color of her bed sheets.
Schmidt rebutted that the taped conversation made it clear that Vinje was aware of what she was doing.
"The truth is she had sex with (the victim), and she knew it," Schmidt said.
