LaPerouse Expedition talk to be held at Downtown Library

A talk on "Cartography of the LaPerouse Expedition in Alaska in 1786" will be presented by the LaPerouse Alaska Association on Aug. 8 at the Downtown Library at 3 p.m.

John Baldry will present an illustrated talk on the map-making of the LaPerouse expedition, and Larry Vose and Bob Winter will present about "Navigating into Lituya Bay."

All marine pilots, Baldry first sailed in Alaskan waters in 1969 and has an interest in early navigation. Vose was a former captain of the USS Planetree and chief of aids-to-navigation and Winter has navigated Lituya Bay many times to service the terrestrial range markers there.

The event is free and open to the public.

The LaPerouse Alaska Association was formed this year and has plans for future presentations about the early European explorers in Alaska and the Tlingit people they encountered.
