Coast Guard helps sinking boat near Kodiak Island

KODIAK - The U.S. Coast Guard assisted a 50-foot fishing vessel that started sinking on the northwest side of Kodiak Island in Spiridon Bay.

Petty Officer Charly Hengen said the Coast Guard Command Center in Anchorage got a call reporting that the Luna needed help after it struck a rock while fishing for salmon.

Coast Guard helicopters lowered dewatering pumps to the crew members, who were assisted by several Good Samaritans.

The problem was controlled, and Hengen says the crew repaired the vessel in preparation for a return to Kodiak.
